Considering a Religiously Affiliated College? The difference may not be as significant as you think. It can be difficult to tell sometimes if a college is religiously affiliated. -Most commonly the difference between religious and nonreligious colleges include required religion or philosophy courses and having chapel services on campus (that are almost always not mandatory to attend). You may possibly have to write about religion in an admissions essay. -Don't assume anything from the college name. Just because a college has a church-related word in its name (Wesleyan, Baptist, Christian, Lutheran) that doesn't necessarily mean that it's a Christian institution. Conversely, the names of many Christian colleges and universities give no obvious indication of their faith orientation. -Many colleges incorporate their religious history with a modern understanding of higher education and the difference is so slight that students may not even realize they are attending a religiously affiliated college. -Many private colleges in the U.S. were founded by a church or denomination but the majority have become very secular over time. -Students say they sometimes find a greater acceptance by fellow students and faculty to discuss faith issues (of any kind) at a religiously affiliated college. Also, some of these colleges may be held to honor codes with trust at the base.

Why It's Tougher To Get Into College by Lyric Wallwork Winik, PARADE, July 8, 2007, p. 10.
Getting into college is getting harder - for everyone. A perfect 4.0 GPA or SAT score no longer guarantees admission to top schools. Why so competitive? The number of applicants is higher and the pool of applicants is also more talented. Some, afraid to be shut out, are applying to many more schools now, adding to the competition for a limited number of slots. Kids should not get the message that they can't compete. Many colleges are looking to enhance the diversity of students racially, ethnically, and socio-economically. There are ways to get into college. |
